Blue Velvet (1986) (18) 121mins

Screening as part of Kino's David Lynch Retrospective.

College student Jeffrey Beaumont returns home after his father has a stroke. When he discovers a severed ear in an abandoned field, Beaumont teams up with detective's daughter Sandy Williams to solve the mystery. They believe beautiful lounge singer Dorothy Vallens may be connected with the case, and Beaumont finds himself becoming drawn into her dark, twisted world, where he encounters sexually depraved psychopath Frank Booth.

A 1986 neo-noir mystery thriller written and directed by David Lynch with intense performances and hauntingly powerful scenes and images, Blue Velvet is an unforgettable vision of innocence lost starring Laura Dern, Isabella Rossellini, Kyle MacLachlan and Dennis Hopper.

David Lynch is an American filmmaker and screenwriter who is known for his uniquely disturbing and mind-bending visual work, with his films combining the cheerfully mundane with the shockingly macabre. Although Lynch has never received an Oscar (he has received 3 nominations for Best Director) in 2019 he was awarded an Academy Honary Award in 2019. He has won both the Palme D'Or and the Best Directors Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and a Golden Lion  award for lifetime achievement at the Venice Film Festival.
