Darkest Hour (PG) 125mins

Winner of the Best Actor (Drama) Golden Globe award (Gary Oldman) and nominated for 6 Oscars including Best Picture and Best Actor (Gary Oldman) and 9 BAFTAs including Best Film and Outstanding British Film, Best Actor (Gary Oldman) and Best Supporting Actress (Kristin Scott Thomas).

A thrilling and inspiring true story begins at the precipice of World War II as, within days of becoming Prime Minister of Great Britain, Winston Churchill must face one of his most turbulent and defining trials: exploring a negotiated peace treaty with Nazi Germany, or standing firm to fight for the ideals, liberty and freedom of a nation. As the unstoppable Nazi forces roll across Western Europe and the threat of invasion is imminent, and with an unprepared public, a sceptical King, and his own party plotting against him, Churchill must withstand his darkest hour, rally a nation, and attempt to change the course of world history.

Directed by Joe Wright (Atonement) and starring Gary Oldman, Kristin Scott Thomas, Lily James, Ben Mendelsohn, Stephen Dillane, Samuel West, Ronald Pickup and David Schofield.

'Gripping, touching, amusing and enlightening, his [Gary Oldman’s] performance is the prime reason this film must be seen — but not the only one’  Empire

'Gary Oldman is a tremendous Winston Churchill in high-octane drama’  The Guardian

‘what a Winston: Oldman’s finest hour’  The Times

‘V for very good’  Daily Mail

‘Gary Oldman is terrific as beleaguered wartime leader Winston Churchill in a beguiling drama that plays the events of 1940 as a pacy, punchy thriller’  The Guardian

‘it’s impossible not to enjoy it’  The Guardian

‘This isn't an uncritical celebration of British bulldog spirit but a nuanced portrait of Churchill at a key point early in the war’  The Independent

‘It's an amazing performance: the only star turn I've seen in which a famous actor visible in nearly every scene would be unrecognisable if we didn't know his name already’  Financial Times

‘Oldman is sheer joy’  Little White Lies
