Mulholland Drive (2001) (15) 147mins

Screening as part of Kino's David Lynch Retrospective.

A dark-haired woman is left amnesiac after a car crash. She wanders the streets of Los Angeles in a daze before taking refuge in an apartment. There she is discovered by Betty, a wholesome Midwestern blonde who has come to the City of Angels seeking fame as an actress. Together, the two attempt to solve the mystery of Rita's true identity.
David Lynch's Mulholland Drive is pure cinema - a gorgeous, noir-narcotic loop of heartbreak in the "dream place" of Los Angeles.

Written and directed by David Lynch, Mulholland Drive is a brilliant commentary on Hollywood's machinations. It has been named as both the BBC Culture’s critics’ poll and film critic's Mark Kermode's best film of this century, with the latter noting that this is partly because it stands up to, and demands, repeated viewing.

Starring Naomi Watts, Laura Elena Harring, Justin Theroux, Brian Beacock, Mark Pellegrino, Chad Everett, Scott Coffey, Brent Briscoe, Diane Baker, Robert Forster, Billy Ray Cyrus, Angelo Badalamenti, Lee Grant, Dan Hedaya and Ann Miller.

David Lynch is an American filmmaker and screenwriter who is known for his uniquely disturbing and mind-bending visual work, with his films combining the cheerfully mundane with the shockingly macabre. Although Lynch has never received an Oscar (he has received 3 nominations for Best Director) in 2019 he was awarded an Academy Honary Award in 2019. He has won both the Palme D'Or and the Best Directors Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and a Golden Lion  award for lifetime achievement at the Venice Film Festival.

Each film/all tickets £9.50

At Kino Rye on Sunday 13th June there will be a 15 minute interval between Mulholland Drive and Blue Velvet in which you will be entitled to a free regular sized coffee or glass of wine or a bottle of  beer if tickets to  both films have been purchased. Please present tickets at bar as proof of purchase.
