Pain And Glory (15) 113mins

Spanish auteur Pedro Almodóvar’s 21st feature film is a semi-autobiographical tale following Salvador Mallo, a film director in decline, as he recalls a series of experiences and encounters from his past: his childhood growing up in the ‘60s in Valencia, his first love affair in ‘80s Madrid, the pain of heartbreak and his early discovery of cinema, all told as the past and present come crashing down around him.

Written and directed by Academy Award winner Almodóvar (The Skin I Live In, Volver), this is an intense, evocative and beautifully produced film.

Starring Antonio Banderas and Penélope Cruz with Asier Etxeandia, Leonardo Sbaraglia, Nora Navas, Cecilia Roth and Raúl Arévalo.

'witty, intelligent and sensuous'  ****The Guardian

'Pain and Glory is Almodóvar's best work for years, marvellously framed and composed, comparatively restrained for him, hugely enjoyable moment by moment'  *****London Evening Standard

''Banderas has rarely been better'...the hangdog expression is riven with pain, and [Banderas] plays Mallo as emotionally cauterised yet beneath it all still desperate to connect, to love and to make more films'  ****The Times

'a major work, graced with career-best work from Antonio Banderas'  ****Empire

‘Pedro Almodóvar’s 21st feature, is nothing less than delicious, a perfectly poised creation that has you leaving the cinema feeling better about the world in the way that good movies can do like nothing else’ ★★★★★ The Evening Standard
