Whisky Galore! (PG) 98mins

Introducing new audiences, and reminding existing fans, to the wonderful story of the SS Politician, an 8000-ton cargo ship sailing for Kingston, Jamaica and New Orleans with a cargo including 28,000 cases of malt whisky. On 5 February 1941, during gale force winds, she ran aground off the Island of Eriskay in the Outer Hebrides giving islanders the opportunity to get their hands on the 'water of life.' There are two problems though; the local minister will not allow work to take place on a Sunday and Captain Waggett, the Home Guard officer, refuses to allow any looting...

Great fun starring Gregor Fisher, Kevin Guthrie, Tim Pigott-Smith, James Cosmo, Eddie Izzard, Sean Biggerstaff, John Sessions and Fenella Woolgar.

‘Its setting on the imaginary isle of Todday off the west coast of Scotland lends itself to gorgeous colour photography and the gentle, subversive wit of the 1949 version has been left intact’  The Times

‘What makes the film so pleasurable is the humour and lyricism with which it tells its rousing story of whisky-loving small timers coming together together to keep officialdom at bay’  The Independent

‘Whisky Galore! offers a true taste of Scotland that's well worth acquiring’ The List

‘its gentle wit is warming and welcome’ The Times

‘charming’  The Times

‘a delight’  The Times

‘the film has an ingeniously subversive tone similar to Bill Forsyth’s Local Hero’  The Times

‘for a new generation this Whisky Galore will be a pleasure’  The Times

‘The film has an ingeniously subversive tone similar to Bill Forsyth’s Local Hero, and the running joke here is that the islanders are always polite and vaguely helpful in the face of authority when the customs and excise men come to investigate, but instinctively move in a pack to break all the rules as soon as backs are turned. Pomposity will be pricked wherever possible’ The Times
